Starting a co-operative

Co-operative Housing Ireland provides support and advice to those wishing to start new housing co-operatives. At a minimum, you will need seven people who are willing to adopt a shared set of Rules. The Rules of new co-operatives can be supplied by Co-operative Housing Ireland and the Association can also provide support in registering with the Registrar of Friendly Societies.

If you are thinking about starting a new housing co-operative, we recommend considering what form of tenure you are aiming for (rental, ownership, shared-ownership, etc.). Does your group have access to any appropriate sites? What sources of finance might be available to you?
