Co-operative Housing Ireland launches 31 new homes in Clare

October 14, 2021

Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr PJ Ryan, launched 31 BER A3-rated homes, provided by Co-operative Housing Ireland, in Gleann Cora, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare on Tuesday 12th October 2021.

Discussing the new homes in Gleann Cora, Chairperson of Co-operative Housing Ireland (CHI) Pearse O’Shiel said, “Developments like this in Gleann Cora, Newmarket-on-Fergus, are of vital importance. Housing need is often seen as a Dublin issue or an issue for large cities. However, recent reports have highlighted the dramatic increases in rent outside of the larger cities; year on year, they have increased by 11.4%. For Clare County this has been even more dramatic at 17.5%.”

Mr O’Shiel continued, “Homes provided by CHI are affordable and provide security of tenure not experienced before by many of our members. It is our hope that Gleann Cora can go some way in alleviating the housing need here in Clare.”

Speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr. PJ Ryan said, “I’m delighted to officially launch Gleann Cora, which will provide much needed homes to people in Newmarket-on-Fergus. It’s been a pleasure to meet and welcome residents to the estate here today. It’s my hope that each of you enjoy a fulfilling life in your new homes.”

Cllr. Ryan continues, “Partnering with CHI on this scheme has been a very fruitful venture for us here in Clare. Newmarket-on-Fergus is a desirable and high-demand town due to its proximity to the M18, Limerick City, Shannon and Ennis. Gleann Cora is conveniently located for new residents within walking distance of the town centre, church and local GAA club.”

Speaking about his new home in Gleann Cora, new resident and CHI Member Magdi Soliman said, “Our last family home was in Clarecastle and we rented it. It was cold and the landlady refused to have things fixed. Eventually she informed us that she needed the house back for her son who was moving home from abroad, so we applied to the local authorities for a home and CHI’s Housing Officer contacted us about this house.”

Mr Soliman continued, “This home is a huge change for us. The heating system is an Air to Water Heat pump: it’s very efficient and there is always hot water. The kids have friends in the estate who go to the same school as them and my wife has made friends locally too. It’s very important for us as a family to get involved in the local community.

CHI is one of Ireland’s largest Approved Housing Bodies working with Local Authorities and others to meet the housing needs of low-income households.

The 31 homes provided by CHI in Gleann Cora were achieved in partnership with Clare Co. Council, the Housing Finance Agency and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The scheme contains a mixture of three-bed detached and semi-detached homes.
